ALSO, remember to keep in mind that the National Safety Council (NSC) is launching, to our loyal members, an opportunity to participate in this year’s NEW Corporate Meetings Program (CMP). The CMP will be held in conjunction with the NSC 2008 Congress & Expo, September 19-26 in Anaheim, California.

Last year, the NSC worked with several companies including Emerson Electric and the Department of Defense (DoD) to schedule their corporate meetings in conjunction with the NSC Congress & Expo. Each company realized it was a cost-effective way to conduct business plus give their employees the opportunity to experience all that the NSC Congress & Expo had to offer.

It was a huge success. Not only did Emerson Electric bring over 150 employees but some of them had never participated in the NSC Congress & Expo. Plus, the DoD had this to say about their experience:

“We find great synergy by holding the DoD Safety & Health Forum in conjunction with the NSC Congress & Expo. We are able to provide DoD safety and health managers our strategic direction as a compliment to broader lessons learned and developments from the highest performing organization. We will continue to use the NSC Congress & Expo as our natural meeting place for learning and growing.”
John Seibert, CIH, CSP
Asst for Safety, Health & Fire
Office of the Deputy under Secretary of Defense (Installations & Environment)

By participating in this program, you will receive the following:

• Complimentary meeting space at one of the several NSC contracted hotels in Anaheim.
• Assistance with securing hotel room blocks.
• A 20% discount off Full Congress registration.
• One complimentary seat at the National Awards Banquet held in conjunction with the NSC 2008 Congress & Expo. This event is a wonderful way to reward your employees and demonstrate your support for the NSC and its mission to make our world safer.
(A value of $200)

In closing, we are excited about the launch of this new program and hope that our Texas members will take advantage of what this opportunity has to offer.

To participate in the Corporate Meetings Program, please contact Tammy Washington before July 11 at

Conducting a "FIRST" in the Lone Star State

After Alaska, Texas is our nation's largest state. After California, it's also the most populous. Texas, too, was the location of more than 3,500 traffic fatalities in 1995 and will now be the first to test a new state-employer alliance to improve road safety.

The Council has received a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation's Traffic Safety Section to complete the "Texas Employer Traffic Safety Program," an initiative to promote statewide employer involvement in motor vehicle crash prevention for employees, both on and off the job.

The Grant will involve Council staff in a wide range of program areas, including our Transportation Safety Group, Defensive Driving Courses, Research and Statistics, Interactive Marketing, Communications and Public Affairs, Creative Services, Division Services and Conventions. It is a great opportunity for TXDOT to provide our employers here in Texas a vast array of information and materials on traffic safety.

This Program launched October 1 and its aim is essentially three-fold:

--to educate employers about their cost in dollars and non-productivity from traffic-related injuries and deaths among workers and their dependents;

--to connect employers with Texas traffic safety resources and implement drivers' training especially in regard to impaired driving, distracted driving and fleet safety;

--to create an effective model for implementing similar programs in other states.

Council activities to support the program will include building a state-wide employer network, creating an Employer Traffic Safety Information Kit, developing a Web-based clearinghouse for employer resources, establishing effective traffic safety messages/materials and structuring a new traffic safety event at the Texas Safety Conference & Expo.

Living by the Texas Department of Transportation's slogan "Don't Mess With Texas," the Council hopes to make a difference in protecting the people and vitality of the state.
